๐Natural dye (Eco-Print)
(available in spring and summer only)
Eco-Print is an environmentally friendly handmade plant printing technique, such as teak leaves on fabric or paper. Light fabrics made of natural fibres are suitable for eco-printing. In order to gain the colour pigments of the selected leaves, we work with plant protein, which we obtain by cooking the fabrics in coconut milk or soy milk. The leaves are soaked in a metal salt solution. The results are these wonderful eco-print on the fabrics. The colours of the leaves can change, but also intensifying! As a pre-treatment, the fabric is wrung out after the milk bath, loosened and placed on a work surface to lay the collected flowers and leaves for the print. In the next step the fabric with the leaves on it will be rolled up. If the fabric is thin, the dye would press through all the layers of the fabric, so a heat-resistant film will be wrapped, as the plants and fabric need intensive contact in order to achieve clear printing results. Afterwards, the tied roll of fabric will be placed in a pot with a sieve for the steaming process which lasts several hours. Now it is necessary to wait for two to three days of exposure time. Finally the most exciting moment of the entire printing process, on the third day at the latest, the leaves will be removed! Since there is nothing we can really plan ahead using this technique, it is always fascinating to see the results that emerge after the removal of the plant parts and washing and ironing the fabric! Afterwards, the fabric must dry so that the colours can soak in even more. Then it finally is time to wash and then dry again.
